1. Plan Ahead and Prepare A poorly planned trip often leads to environmental damage. Research the area before you go, check weather forecasts, and bring the right gear (like reusable water bottles instead of single-use plastics). Knowing the rules of the national park or trail you are visiting is your first step.
2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces Stick to established trails and campsites. Walking off-trail destroys fragile vegetation and accelerates soil erosion. When setting up your tent, use existing clearings rather than altering a new area.
3. Dispose of Waste Properly “Pack it in, pack it out.” This is the golden rule. Every single piece of trash, including food scraps like apple cores or banana peels, must come home with you. For human waste, dig a cathole at least 6-8 inches deep and at least 200 feet away from any water source.
4. Leave What You Find It can be tempting to take a beautiful rock, a wildflower, or an antler as a souvenir. Resist the urge. Leave rocks, plants, and natural objects as you find them so others can enjoy their beauty, and local ecosystems remain undisturbed.
5. Respect Wildlife Observe animals from a distance. Never feed wild animals, as it alters their natural behaviors and makes them dependent on humans (which often leads to them becoming aggressive and eventually being put down). Store your food securely in bear-proof containers or by hanging it.
